Ligand Cooperation in the Formal Hydrogenation of N2O Using a PCsp2P Iridium Pincer Complex

Journal of the American Chemical Society: Latest Articles (ACS Publications)  by Lauren E. Doyle, Warren E. Piers and Javier Borau-Garcia  /   12d   //   keep unread   //   hide   //   preview A new PC carbene P pincer ligand with 2,3-benzo[ b ]thiophene linkers connecting the flanking dialkyl phosphine donors to the central carbene can be attached to Ir(I). The chloro derivative reacts with N 2 O with loss of N 2  to form an iridaepoxide species by addition of an oxygen atom to the Ir═C linkage. This compound reacts with H 2  to afford the oxidative addition product, in which the hydride ligands are  trans  to the Ir–O bond. Heating this dihydride results in slow release of H 2 O; kinetic and spectroscopic studies show that conversion of the dihydride to its isomer, in which the hydrides are  cis  to the Ir–O bond, is required for H 2 O elimination to take place. Toge...

Guest-Induced Transformation of a Porphyrin-Edged FeII4L6 Capsule into a CuIFeII2L4 Fullerene Receptor

Angewandte Chemie International Edition  by Daniel M. Wood, Wenjing Meng, Tanya K. Ronson, Artur R. Stefankiewicz, Jeremy K. M. Sanders, Jonathan R. Nitschke  /   10d   //   keep unread   //   hide   //   preview Abstract The combination of a bent diamino(nickel(II) porphyrin) with 2-formylpyridine and Fe II  yielded an Fe II 4 L 6  cage. Upon treatment with the fullerenes C 60  or C 70 , this cage was found to transform into a new host–guest complex incorporating three Fe II  centers and four porphyrin ligands, in an arrangement that is hypothesized to maximize π interactions between the porphyrin units of the host and the fullerene guest bound within its central cavity. The new complex shows coordinative unsaturation at one of the Fe II  centers as the result of the incommensurate metal-to-ligand ratio, which enabled the preparation of a heterometallic cone-shaped Cu I F...

Identification and Spectroscopic Characterization of Nonheme Iron(III) Hypochlorite Intermediates

Angewandte Chemie International Edition  by Apparao Draksharapu, Davide Angelone, Matthew G. Quesne, Sandeep K. Padamati, Laura Gómez, Ronald Hage, Miquel Costas, Wesley R. Browne, Sam P. de Visser  /   9d   //   keep unread   //   hide   //   preview Abstract Fe III –hypohalite complexes have been implicated in a wide range of important enzyme-catalyzed halogenation reactions including the biosynthesis of natural products and antibiotics and post-translational modification of proteins. The absence of spectroscopic data on such species precludes their identification. Herein, we report the generation and spectroscopic characterization of nonheme Fe III –hypohalite intermediates of possible relevance to iron halogenases. We show that Fe III -OCl polypyridylamine complexes can be sufficiently stable at room temperature to be characterized by UV/Vis absorption, resonance Raman and EPR spectroscopies, ...

A TEMPO-Free Copper-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidation of Alcohols

Angewandte Chemie International Edition  by Boran Xu, Jean-Philip Lumb, Bruce A. Arndtsen  /   5d   //   keep unread   //   hide   //   preview 最近来た、Lumbさんの論文です。アルコールの酸化反応は酸素と適切な銅錯体で進行するようです。 Abstract The copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols without an external  N -oxide co-oxidant is described. The catalyst system is composed of a Cu/diamine complex inspired by the enzyme tyrosinase, along with dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) or  N -methylimidazole (NMI). The Cu catalyst system works without 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-l-piperidinoxyl (TEMPO) at ambient pressure and temperature, and displays activity for un-activated secondary alcohols, which remain a challenging substrate for catalytic aerobic systems. Our work underscores the importance of finding alternative mechanistic pathways for alcohol oxidation, which complement Cu/TEMPO systems, and demonstrate, in this ...

Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation by a Dinuclear Copper Complex in a Neutral Aqueous Solution

Angewandte Chemie International Edition   by Xiao-Jun Su, Meng Gao, Lei Jiao, Rong-Zhen Liao, Per E. M. Siegbahn, Jin-Pei Cheng, Ming-Tian Zhang  /    5d   //    keep unread    //    hide    //    preview Abstract Electrocatalytic water oxidation using the oxidatively robust 2,7-[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-1,8-naphthyridine ligand (BPMAN)-based dinuclear copper(II) complex, [Cu 2 (BPMAN)(μ-OH)] 3+ , has been investigated. This catalyst exhibits high reactivity and stability towards water oxidation in neutral aqueous solutions. DFT calculations suggest that the OO bond formation takes place by an intramolecular direct coupling mechanism rather than by a nucleophilic attack of water on the high-oxidation-state Cu IV O moiety. Cu III  not Cu IV : A robust dinuclear Cu II  complex catalyzed water oxidation in a neutral aqueous solution. The OO bond formation was proceeded by an intram...

Expanding the Enzyme Universe: Accessing Non-Natural Reactions by Mechanism-Guided Directed Evolution

Angewandte Chemie International Edition  by Hans Renata, Z. Jane Wang, Frances H. Arnold  /   12d   //   keep unread   //   hide   //   preview Abstract High selectivity and exquisite control over the outcome of reactions entice chemists to use biocatalysts in organic synthesis. However, many useful reactions are not accessible because they are not in nature’s known repertoire. In this Review, we outline an evolutionary approach to engineering enzymes to catalyze reactions not found in nature. We begin with examples of how nature has discovered new catalytic functions and how such evolutionary progression has been recapitulated in the laboratory starting from extant enzymes. We then examine non-native enzyme activities that have been exploited for chemical synthesis, with an emphasis on reactions that do not have natural counterparts. Non-natural activities can be improved by directed evolution, t...

Combination of Redox-Active Ligand and Lewis Acid for Dioxygen Reduction with π-Bound Molybdenum−Quinonoid Complexes

Justin T. Henthorn   ,  Sibo Lin   , and  Theodor Agapie   * Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering,  California Institute of Technology , 1200 East California Boulevard, MC 127-72, Pasadena, California 91125,  United States Abstract A series of π-bound Mo−quinonoid complexes supported by pendant phosphines have been synthesized. Structural characterization revealed strong metal–arene interactions between Mo and the π system of the quinonoid fragment. The Mo–catechol complex ( 2a ) was found to react within minutes with 0.5 equiv of O 2  to yield a Mo–quinone complex ( 3 ), H 2 O, and CO. Si- and B-protected Mo–catecholate complexes also react with O 2  to yield  3  along with (R 2 SiO) n  and (ArBO) 3  byproducts, respectively. Formally, the Mo–catecholate fragment provides two electrons, while the elements bound to the catecholate moiety act as acceptors for the O 2 oxygens. Unreactive by itself, th...
